According to retail industry reports, many large retailers are considering eliminating free shipping for online purchases this holiday season.Several trade magazines said many retail industry experts expect retailers to put more strings on free shipping. Raising minimum-purchase requirements, offering the shipping at no cost for local deliveries only, and offering customers to secure their own shipping.
Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation, says 37 percent of online retailers surveyed last year offered unconditional free shipping while 71 percent dropped the transportation charge under various conditions.
Retail sales have weakened in recent months, but industry officials say online stores are showing the quickest growth. The proof will be in the pudding when the National Retail Federation releases its forecast for holiday season sales on Tuesday.
