What is STEM?

STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These are fields of study that are changing the face of Florida and our nation. Think about it. Without these fields, what would our world look like? No roads, no speed passes, no aeronautics, etc. etc. Worse yet, what would the transportation and logistics industry look like without experts in these fields?

Although this industry seems to change at a slower pace than most, the freight shipping industry has seen more change in the past 10 years than it has in 100 years prior. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and tracking expectations set by the most recognizable carriers - FedEx and UPS - have revolutionized the way we think about transportation of goods and products. Emerging technologies are hitting this industry faster than it takes to load a website. Cloud-based technology has alleviated many of the problems associated with bridging the gap between an ancient industry, like transportation, and technology. Diversification of service-markets and highly specialized services has broadened the acceptance of bar code, tracking and computing technologies.

For example, FreightCenter.com is a third-party logistics company that services a wide range of commercial and residential shippers via its website and back-end system. In recent years, however, FreightCenter.com has seen an increased need for servicing other third parties and high-volume shippers by developing transportation technology that they can use to lower shipping costs and improve efficiency.

What careers are available for graduates of STEM programs?

Beyond doctors and nurses, when we think of STEM careers we typically think about civil engineers, architects, technicians, IT managers and Web or app developers. These fields are extremely important to future progress on a local, state and national scale. Where would we be without roads, city planning, tech gurus and creative thinkers?
