Calculate Freight Rates

Want to see the freight shipping calculator in action? Try it out for yourself below! We even put together a little story to help you see how your customers will interact with your site.

Say you have a website where you sell large, oversize wooden sculptures. Your name is Jacques and you're trés chic and so is you art, which is why you want to share it with the world!

But how do you get your art in the hands of your valued customer? Why, by freight shipping it of course.

Here's how to build a freight shipping calculator for your site so you can make figuring out the cost of shipping your art easy for your interested buyers.

Large wooden sculpture - just waiting to be shipped!

First things first, you need to weigh and measure your item. You do so and discover that the item weighs an impressive 250 lbs and is 45" wide by 20" high and about 8" deep.

Next, you have to package the item. The best thing to do is to build a custom crate for it. All it takes is a few nails and scraps of plywood, which are easy to find at a local hardware store and are fairly inexpensive to purchase. Best part is, the hardware store can cut the pieces for you and since you already have the dimensions all you need to do is add an inch or two to take in account for nailing and any wrapping or bubble wrap you wish to use. The hardware store should also be able to tell you the weight of the plywood.

Total the weight and dimensions of the packaging and you're good to go. Don't forget the pallet, which sets you back about 50 lbs. So, now you're looking at about 370 lbs and 46" wide by 21" high and 9" deep. You're almost there!

Now all you have to do is log in to your FreightCenter.com account and Create a Custom Calculator. All you need to tell us is your pickup location details (zip code and location type) and tell us if you need a lift gate - highly likely if you're shipping from a residence - and we also give you the option if you want the freight company to package the item for you (so you can skip that trip to the hardware store, if you wish). Once you're ready to calculate the freight class, use our handy density calculator to figure out how to classify your freight. In this case, we get a freight class of 70. If you wish, add a handling fee for all your hard work with packaging and calculator building! Voila! Now you're ready to ship. Happy selling...
